Asana is the cultivation of the physical practice, to sit comofortably in stillness. Its literal meaning is "sitting down" or "seat". When the great Sage Patanjali wrote down the sutra's around 400 CE he was most likely referring to a seat tthat one takes for meditation. An Asana practice reinforces the connection between the mind and body, and how we can inhabit the body wholly the fully experience our living moment.
Breath regulation & manipulation, Pranayama can be understood as either ‘prana-yama’ which would mean ‘breath – control’ or ‘breath restraint’, or it could be understood as ‘prana-ayama’ which would translate as ‘freedom of breath’, ‘breath expansion’ or ‘breath liberation’. Pranayama is the act of controlling and directing this energy, namely by controlling the flow of breath. Pranayama involves many different breathing techniques that aim at slightly different results in order to gain mastery over the respiratory process while recognizing the connection between the breath, the mind, and the emotions.
With pranayama, the mind turns inward. When th senses have been quiented we can enter our inner self, inner temple. However if the breath becomes labored or uneven, the senses that take us outward have regained the upper hand and we have entered into the outward world. It is through practice of asana and pranayama that pratyahara is achieved.
The object might be an icon, the breath, or mantra
Complete absorption in the now, fully present consciousness. In meditation, there is an awareness of the observer, the object of observation, and the observed.
The liberation of this state comes from transcending the confines of the ego. You are no longer wrapped up in the trappings of like, dislike, judgment, worry, and fear. You become completely absorbed in the present moment, at all times, while remaining in total awareness. This is a pure state of being. As you go through your daily tasks, you are no longer replaying the past or looking into the future. You are immersed in the enjoyment of each moment as a sacred act.
